Why a 2026 seasonal menu works in a care home kitchen

Better buying, better prices

Root vegetables, brassicas, soft fruits and squash hit peak season through Spring & Summer 2026, which translates into better supplier pricing and less plate waste. New potatoes, asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli and rhubarb all land in this window.

Nostalgic favourites lift morale

Long-stay residents notice when the menu shifts. A rotation built around familiar dishes — spotted dick, rice pudding, fish & chips, treacle tart — gives them something to look forward to, while you introduce one new dish at a time rather than a full re-spec.

Options for fussy eaters, built in

Lighter evening meals, jacket potato with fillings, and soup & sandwiches are flagged in the pack. Care home managers tell us this is the single biggest reduction in plate waste on their dementia and dementia-adjacent wings.

Questions care home managers ask

Is this really free, and what do you get in return for my email?

Yes, the PDF is free. We use your email to send the download link. If you tick the opt-in box we may send occasional practical kitchen resources (no more than one email a fortnight). Every email has an unsubscribe link.

Can I adapt it for IDDSI texture levels?

Yes. Dishes that travel well across IDDSI texture levels are marked in the pack, and most purees and soft options are easy swaps. The BDA Care Home Digest and the IDDSI framework are the standards we work to.

What cycle length is it?

6 weeks, with breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and a lighter evening meal across all 42 days. This is the 2026 Spring & Summer edition.

Is it suitable for a small care home (under 30 residents)?

Yes. Quantities scale to your home’s size — the plan is per meal slot, not per headcount. Smaller homes may not need every lunch-and-dinner swap.

What about fussy eaters or residents with smaller appetites?

The pack flags lighter evening options separately — jacket potato with fillings, soup & sandwiches, cheese toasties. Most kitchens that switch to this approach report less plate waste, particularly on dementia and dementia-adjacent wings.

Does it include nostalgic favourites residents recognise?

Yes. Spotted dick, bread & butter pudding, jam roly-poly, treacle tart, fish & chips, rice pudding, sticky toffee pudding — the dishes residents ask for by name. They sit alongside lighter modern options so there’s something for everyone.

Does the pack cover allergens and dietary requirements?

Vegetarian options are flagged. Allergens should be confirmed against your 14 allergen list and your suppliers’ specifications before serving — this is standard care home compliance.

Can I print it and stick it on the kitchen wall?

Yes. The layout is sized for A4 so it prints cleanly. Reprints for your own use are fine.

Will I get follow-up emails pushing services?

Only if you tick the opt-in box. The mandatory email is just the download link. Marketing emails are opt-in only and you can unsubscribe in one click.

Who actually built this?

It was built from working in care home kitchens across South Wales — by people who run them, not consultants. KitchenFlow provides short-notice chef and kitchen assistant cover for care homes and supported living settings.
