Oven Servicing Schedule for Care Homes

Your oven does the heavy lifting. A service schedule keeps it safe, efficient and inspection-ready.

Why service at all

A poorly serviced oven wastes energy, cooks unevenly, and can be a fire risk. CQC and your insurer both expect evidence of upkeep.

An oven that’s 20°C out doesn’t just cook badly — it can undercook food safely and trigger a recall, or overcook and waste a full tray. Calibration is a food-safety issue, not a nicety.

Recommended schedule

  • Light use — Full service every 12 months
  • Daily high-volume use — Every 6 months
  • Gas ovens — Gas safety check yearly by a Gas Safe engineer, plus service

Set the service date from first use, and diary the next one the day the engineer leaves. Servicing always slips when it’s ‘whenever we remember’.

What a service covers

  • Thermostat calibration
  • Door seal and hinge check
  • Fan and element test
  • Deep clean of burners/chambers
  • Safety cut-off verification

Ask the engineer for a written report, not just a thumbs-up. The report is your evidence and it tells you what’s wearing so you can plan, not panic.

Between services

Wipe spills the same day, check temperatures with a probe weekly, and never ignore a strange smell or sound.

Most oven failures announce themselves weeks ahead — a new noise, a longer heat-up, a door that doesn’t close square. Acting on the small sign avoids the big breakdown.
