Refurbished Commercial Equipment Guide

Refurbished kit can cut costs by half — if you buy it right. Here’s how to do it without ending up with someone else’s problem.

What’s safe to buy refurbished

Prep equipment (processors, mixers), shelving, and some ovens. Avoid refurbished fridges unless the compressor is warrantied — that’s the expensive bit.

The test is: what’s the costly failure mode, and is it covered? For a processor the risk is cosmetic. For a fridge it’s the compressor — and that’s most of the unit’s value.

What to check

  • Proof of service history
  • Warranty of at least 3-6 months
  • Visual condition of seals, blades, and casing
  • That it’s a current model you can get parts for

No warranty, no deal. Refurbished without cover is just used. The warranty is the difference between a saving and a gamble.

Where to buy

Reputable catering equipment dealers who refurbish in-house and offer warranty. Avoid unknown marketplace sellers with no returns.

A dealer who refurbs in-house stands behind the work because they did it. A random listing can’t — and won’t.

The maths

If refurbished + warranty costs less than half of new and the model is current, it’s usually a sound buy for support equipment.

Set your own line before you shop: under half of new, current model, warranty included. If it ticks all three, it’s a buy. If not, walk.
